Three Real New Year’s Resolutions for Real Parents

News flash: New Year’s resolutions don’t work! I don’t know about you, but I’ve set them for myself in the past and failed every time. In fact, research says that less than 10% of New Year’s resolutions are actually achieved. So, what am I doing writing about New Year’s resolutions if they don’t work? Well, as a parent, I’m wonderful at guilt tripping myself and questioning everything I do with my six-year-old mini cyclone. So, this year, I thought I’d talk about some different kinds of resolutions. Forget the January 1 promises of losing weight, exercising more and swearing less … Read More

Why a cubby is the best present: Q&A with a six-year-old

With Christmas just around the corner, I thought I’d get the inside scoop on what makes a cubby house the best present ever. And who better to ask than a six-year-old? In this piece of serious investigative reporting, I talk to six-year-old Cailin about her cubby house and why she thinks all kids should have one. Hi Cailin. How are you today?  “Good.”  Excellent. I’m well, too, thanks for asking. So, what do you like about your cubby house? “It’s colourful. And it looks nice. And there are these little shelves in it for plants. And there’s a little walkway … Read More

Save yourself some present-buying stress this Christmas!

“MUM! DAD! Is that my Christmas present?” We’ve all been there. (At least, I hope we all have …) It’s five weeks before Christmas, the kids have been searching the house for 45 weeks, trying to sniff out their Christmas booty, until EUREKA! They’ve found your cunningly clever Christmas-present hiding spot (it’s always at the top of a cupboard, isn’t it?). Sigh. And that’s just ONE annoying bit about Christmas-present buying. There’s also: Battling the shopping centre crowds. Being forced to listen to the same Christmas jingles in each shop. DECIDING what to buy (ugh!). Wasting heaps of money on … Read More

Play it safe outside and beat the heat!

We are full swing into spring, but where I live in Queensland, it feels like summer already! This means my daughter (AKA the human heat bead) will FINALLY be dressed appropriately for the next six months – and I will stop getting tut-tutted whenever I take her anywhere (she refuses to wear a jumper or anything remotely warm, even when everyone else is wearing five layers of clothing and clutching hot water bottles). It also means we parents need to keep a few things in mind as our littlies play outside. Children’s bodies don’t cool down as quickly as adults. … Read More

The Importance Of Play For Older Children.

Play – it’s not just for littlies! When we think of play, we tend to think of younger children: usually eight or under, playing games of hide and seek and tag, having fun with dolls and cars, going on imaginary adventures, pretending to be pirates or unicorns. It’s true that younger children love these kinds of games. However, play is important for older children, too! In fact, play is important for children – and adults – of all ages. Play is widely recognised as being vital to children’s social, emotional, cognitive and physical development. Schools understand this need, especially in … Read More
